Johannesburg is our home

30 Sep 2019

Liberty's Head Office in the heart of Braamfontein shares space with some of Johannesburg's most iconic historical and cultural landmarks. The Johannesburg Theatre, Clive van den Berg's Eland Sculpture and Constitution Hill reflect the cultural diversity and historical relevance of all South Africans. Wits University is a centre of learning excellence for young women and men as they chase the freedom they so rightly deserve.

Not too far away stands Mahatma Gandhi, cast forever in bronze as a symbol of the power of peaceful protest, who was himself so richly inspired by this nation. Street vendors and spaza shops conduct business next to sleek glass offices and the beautiful modern structure, the Mandela Bridge welcomes citizens and international visitors into our beautiful city. We are truly proud to be a part of the rich diversity that our city and country celebrates.

The tide of violent protests and unjustifiable increase in gender-related violence that we've seen in the last month was unprecedented. The violence that gripped the city and the shocking news stories about violence against women and children are happening right on our doorstep. It is the very opposite of what South Africa stands for: that my brother is my brother - Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu.

The City of Johannesburg is Liberty's home. It is a part of our heritage. We are fully invested in its failures and successes. South Africa belongs to us all and we are deeply invested in its people and the future. That is why it is so difficult to come to terms with the events that are scarring our people.

Johan Minnie, Managing Executive of Customer and Adviser Experience at Liberty says, "When the country is experiencing unprecedented levels of uncertainty, social and political unrest as well as economic hardship, you need to make sure that you are financially stable and protected. It is important for us to take insurance cover seriously. Risk cover is like an investment that cashes in when uncertainties arise, and risks become realities. The last thing you should be doing is cutting your insurance cover while you wait for better times."

It is time to rebuild together

The time to rebuild has come. It's time for us to unite against wrongdoing and to acknowledge and address the scourge of violence against women and children. Doing the right thing is not always easy and we don’t expect it to all be smooth sailing. However, it is important that we set goals and move towards them.

To do this successfully, we need to look to the future.

As a Liberty client, you know that we're in the business of delivering financial advice to help you make well informed risk and investment decisions.
